The Art of Downsizing May 4th, 2010

I just love large paintings. They give me a thrill, the bigger the better! To date very few of my works have been smaller than 1 metre.. most can’t even fit on my poor overburdened easel. However, due to the amount of enquires I have had regarding something “a touch smaller” or the general sigh of “I love it! But it wont fit my wall..” I have decided to spend a short period completing some “mini” works..

All of these works are to be under 1 metre on the longest side, with some as small as 20cm squared. Oh so cute! And with the additional bonus of a slighter size meaning a slighter price tag. I’m a firm believer in works being priced on size rather than time, I know for myself if I wanted to purchase a large extravagant work I would expect to pay a large extravagant price, however a smaller work from the same artist I would expect to pay less.. half the size? Half the price.

So far this has been quite a fun little exercise for myself. Many of the techniques I use for my large works are hard to adapt to a smaller canvas, though my easel is rather excited at being used for once and I must admit it is a lot easier on the back!

So far I have completed three works for this project:

These boxed nudes were very cute, and I found it very challenging working on such a small scale as these came in at only 20cm squared.

My latest work I am rather chuffed with, I managed to convert several of my larger painting techniques to this smaller scale to still get the depth of texture and colour that I love.

There are still many more works to come in this mini project, and they will be spread across different collections; at present I am focusing on smaller works for the Nudes Collection but once those are completed I will also be completing some more emotive works for the White Collection. So keep looking in!
